Nowadays, slow living and cozy home environments are all the rage. And if you’re anything like me, it’s probably a trend that you can get behind. I’m tired of the minimalist aesthetic and I yearn for my home to give the same vibe as a cabin in the woods. Or provide the same comfort you felt at grandma’s house as a child. And if you’re also wondering how to make your home cozy without breaking the bank… This is for you!
Step One – Choose The Right Colors
In most people’s interpretations, “cozy” colors are those with warm/earthy tones. Oranges and greens are popular examples; but depending on the shade, many different colors could work. For instance, a bright red may not be seen as cozy but a burgundy might!
And ideally, you’d have an entire palette of these colors to work with. Such as buttery yellows, deep browns, or other warm neutrals as primary colors… Then more distinct colors like oranges, greens, blues, and reds for accents! Because, especially if you’re into the more eclectic cozy look, a multitude of colors can really help you achieve it.
Bonus Tips
Now, there are a couple of considerations to be made here. Such as…
- Which colors bring you comfort. At the end of the day, if light pastels, cool tones, or any other color make you feel at home then they could be the “cozy” color for you. So don’t feel too boxed in by stereotypes if the colors other people are using for their cozy decor doesn’t feel right to you.
- Which colors work well together. Part of curating a cozy environment is ensuring that everything is pleasing to the eye. And too many uncomplimentary colors contrasting with each other can actually do the opposite and stress us out instead! (If you’re unsure about which colors work together, there are plenty of resources online where you can learn about color theory, find premade colors palettes, etc. And if you find a color you really like, you could even search for other colors to compliment it!)
Step Two – Pay Attention To Texture
Another big aspect of learning how to make your home cozy is to start considering textures. Generally speaking, the more textures that are present… the more cozy and “lived-in” the space will feel. So a simple, budget-friendly way to introduce more comfort to your home is to invest in the following…

- Rugs – Large area rugs can be pricey, but sometimes it can be even cuter to layer multiple small rugs together to make a larger arrangement.
- Blankets/Pillows – Alternatively, having blankets scattered around your house can contribute to an overall feeling of comfort. And textured throw pillows can add even more to the vibe! (These items are also great opportunities for pops of color.)
- Curtains – If you don’t already have curtains, you could also consider getting some to add even more diverse texture to your spaces. Some people even like to layer more sheer curtains together, or put sheer curtains over thicker ones for an eclectic look. (If you haven’t already noticed, layering textures is a great way to increase your coziness factor.)
Step Three – Be Mindful Of Your Lighting
Now, if there’s one thing that will immediately sabotage a cozy aesthetic, it’s bad lighting! And by bad, I mean bright, overhead lights. Because I don’t know about you… but for many of us, this type of lighting can actually lead to increased stress. And it certainly doesn’t feel too cozy if you ask me.
So what I suggest instead is to focus on switching out your bright, cool-toned lightbulbs for warmer ones if possible. Or look into alternative forms of lighting, such as: fairy lights, lamps, or even candles (you could even opt for electric ones if you have pets or young kids and worry about the fire risk).
Especially at night, you’re sure to see the immediate difference that intentional lighting can make on your home. And you might even get better sleep as a result. I’ve personally started turning off all my overhead lights about an hour before bed, and I’ve noticed such a positive change in my sleep quality because of it.
Step Four – Include Nature
Something a lot of people forget about when it comes to creating a cozy aesthetic is finding a way to include nature. Plants in our homes, for instance, have a lot of benefits. One of which is obviously making the space more inviting and aesthetically pleasing. (Just make sure that you research which ones are safe to have around kids/animals if you’re a parent or pet-owner.)

If you don’t have a particularly green thumb then you could opt for fake plants instead. Or you could even get creative and find other solutions. Like…
- Displaying nature paintings or photos
- Using windows to your advantage
- Using aromatherapy tools to target your sense of smell
- Or even playing nature sounds in the background for situational calming!
Step Five – Make Things Personal
Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, if you’re wondering how to make your home cozy… The answer is simple! Make it personalized to you, make it feel like home instead of a house. Because, at the end of the day, this will make it feel more comfortable than anything I listed above.
There are so many great ways to do this! Ranging from displaying family photos, to scattering little keepsakes around. There are tons of great ideas online, but here are a few of my favorites…
- Adding fun magnets to your fridge (bonus points if you make some yourself)
- Theming certain rooms around things you love (I recently saw a woman theme her entire kitchen around strawberries and it was gorgeous)
- And using your favorite colors throughout your home, even if it’s in small ways.
